Antique GEORGE SHIEBLER STERLING Butter Dish w/ Pierced Liner - JEC (5J11

Description

Gorgeous ornate antique Sterling George Shiebler Butter Dish with a removable pierced Sterling Liner dating to the late 19th Century. It was made for J.E. Caldwell & Co., whose flagship store was located in Philadelphia and sold the finest Silver and Jewelry items. They once were Sterling manufacturers themselves.
The Butter Plate has a scalloped border (flower shaped) with a stunning elaborate repousse’ flower garland border punctuated by large tied Ribbons / tied Bows. Just beautiful.
The reverse side is marked in four places with Shiebler’s hallmark (Wings with S in the center), J.E. Caldwell & Co., Sterling & 9139.
The Antique Sterling Silver Butter Dish / Butter Plate measures approximately 7” in diameter. The removable Sterling pieced Liner measures approximately 4 1/4” in diameter. The Liner is unmarked but assayed you confirm it is Sterling Silver.
In fine table settings, Butter would be kept chilled with ice chips or ice cold water placed under the liner in the shallow depth of the Butter Dish. Often the Butter would be sliced in squares and which you take a sliced butter square with a Butter Pick or Butter Knife. Sometimes there would be an individual Butter Pick or Butter Knife at each place setting for each guest.
The Butter Dish can be used alone without the pierced liner for butter or other purposes, such as a Wine Coaster, cookies, candies, etc…
The Antique Sterling Silver Butter Dish is in fine condition with normal minor surface scratches from use and age as well as an aged patina in places which can be hand polished off.
The Antique Sterling Silver pieced Liner is in a star design with some dings on the border and a few inside as well as expected surface scratches from use from the point of the Butter Picks or Butter Knives.
George Shiebler was one of the finest most innovative American designers / silversmiths of the late 19th Century through the early 20th Century . His workmanship is revered and collected. This Butter Dish is a fine and wonderful example George Shiebler hollowware.
The piece has substantial heft of approximately 5 Troy ounces. The Antique Shiebler Sterling Butter Dish shows well in the photos and just as pretty if not more so in person. The photographs were taken in natural lighting at various angles. (5J11)
